Sleep study, is a test used to diagnose sleep disorders. It records your brain waves, the oxygen level in your blood, and your heart rate and breathing during sleep. A sleep study may be done at a sleep disorders unit within a hospital or at a sleep center. The test is usually performed at night.

Preparation before the test

  1. The patient should arrive in Thailand 2-3 days earlier to visit the doctor for physical examination and assessment. If you would like to visit the doctor on the same date of your arrival, please kindly make an appointment in advance (Appointment date is depended on the doctor availability). If the patient has any underlying diseases, they may need to be referred to consult with specialist for other necessary tests depending on doctors consideration. For your information, the sample of underlying diseases such as, Heart disease, Hypertension, Diabetic, Renal function, must be informed in advance.
  2. Don't consume drinks or food containing alcohol or caffeine during the afternoon and evening before a sleep study. Alcohol and caffeine can change your sleep patterns
  3. You can take a bath or shower before your sleep study. But don't put on lotions, gels, colognes or makeup before the test. They can interfere with the test's sensors, called electrodes.
  4. Bring along your usual bedclothes or other items you use to help you sleep.
  5. It is best not to take a nap on the day of a nighttime sleep study. Taking a daytime nap may make it harder to sleep the night of the sleep study.
  6. Do not use hairspray, hair gel, lotions, or makeup the day of the study. These products have the potential to interfere with the way the electrodes record measurements during sleep.
  7. Take your medications as usual.
  8. Tell your doctor about any skin allergies you have.


After the test

  1. You can return to your usual activities after sleep study.
  2. Very few side effects or complications can happen with a sleep study. These are most likely to be skin irritation from or a reaction to adhesives/tapes used to attach sensors.
  3. At a follow-up appointment, your doctor reviews the results with you. Based on the data gathered, your doctor will discuss any treatment or further evaluation that you may need.
